Meningitis is a type of infection that affects the spinal cord and brain. This type of infection of the membranes of the brain causes swelling and pressure. The pressure causes symptoms which can often be mistaken for flu. Without prompt treatment meningitis is fatal.

Who is at risk?

Many of Hodge Jones and Allen’s meningitis cases have involved newborn children. Babies under 12 months old are especially vulnerable to bacterial meningitis.

Other risk groups are young adults – especially those at university or college living in close proximity to each other.

Symptoms of meningitis can include:

  • High temperature
  • Vomiting
  • Drowsiness
  • Irritability
  • Muscle pain
  • Photophobia (a dislike of bright lights)
  • Severe headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Constant crying / inability to settle down

Symptoms can be hard to record in young babies – who can be especially vulnerable to meningitis. Treatment is urgent is all cases and every hour could be crucial for the patient.
Without urgent antibiotic treatment, meningitis will be fatal. The diagnosis is not easy as meningitis is very much like flu in the symptoms that patients with.

If not treated quickly the patient is at risk of a developing a brain injury or other complications, such as hearing loss.

Case study

Our solicitors have acted in a case where a newborn child, just six weeks old presented to her GP with classic symptoms of meningitis. The GP dismissed the mother’s concerns on two separate occasions. The diagnosis was delayed for 3 days. Finally after the GP had refused to call an ambulance the mother and father called one themselves. At hospital, a lumbar puncture confirmed the diagnosis and antibiotics were commenced.

The treatment saved the child’s life but she had already suffered brain injury which meant that she would never be able to care for herself. She would be wheelchair dependant, requiring 24 hour care for the rest of her life. The claim was settled out of court by the GP’s insurers for £4 millions.
